Syrian state media reported that security forces foiled a missile-launching operation allegedly planned by the Lebanese group Hezbollah from Syrian territory. Authorities said the plot aimed to fire missiles across the border to destabilize the country, describing it as a sabotage attempt linked to a Hezbollah cell.
The announcement comes after weeks of cross-border hostilities involving Hezbollah and Israel, which ended with a 10-day ceasefire on April 17. Syrian officials have recently accused the group of other destabilizing activities, including an alleged attempt to plant an explosive device in Damascus.
Hezbollah denied the accusations, calling them false and fabricated. The group stated it has no presence or activity in Syria and urged Syrian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation before making claims. It also suggested that intelligence services operating in Syria were seeking to inflame tensions between Lebanon and Syria.
Relations between Syria and Hezbollah have shifted since the end of Syria's civil war in 2024. While the group previously supported the government of Bashar Assad, Syria's current authorities have distanced themselves from Iranian influence and adopted a more hostile stance toward Hezbollah.
