Bereaved Israeli and Palestinian fathers now call each other brother

Two bereaved fathers, Israeli Rami Elhanan and Palestinian Bassam Aramin, have formed a deep friendship rooted in shared tragedy and a commitment to peace. Both men lost young daughters to the conflict between their peoples, losses that transformed their lives and led them to work together through the Parents Circle Families Forum, an organization that brings together bereaved Israeli and Palestinian families.

Mr Elhanan, whose daughter was killed in a bombing in 1997, said meeting Palestinian parents for the first time changed his perception of the so-called enemy and helped him see their shared humanity. Years later, he stood beside Mr Aramin after Mr Aramin's daughter was shot and killed, an experience that strengthened their bond and resolve to prevent further suffering.

Together, they travel internationally sharing their stories as a call for mutual respect, equality, and understanding. They argue that recognizing each other's pain and humanity is essential to ending the violence, insisting that all children in the region deserve to live in safety and freedom.

Despite criticism from some within their own communities, both men say their partnership proves that reconciliation is possible. Drawing hope from peace achieved in places like Northern Ireland, they maintain that the conflict does not have to continue indefinitely and believe a just and lasting peace can be achieved.
