Leaked audio has revealed that Britain's ambassador to Washington, Sir Christian Turner, described the phrase 'special relationship' between the United Kingdom and the United States as 'backwards-looking' and burdened with nostalgia. Speaking to students in February, he suggested that the United States likely has only one truly special ally, naming Israel rather than Britain. The comments have surfaced just as King Charles the Third begins a state visit to the United States, drawing renewed attention to the strength of bilateral ties.
Turner also criticised the American political system over its handling of associates linked to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, calling it 'extraordinary' that the scandal had not significantly affected anyone in the United States. He contrasted this with Britain, where prominent figures had faced serious consequences. In addition, he offered candid remarks about Prime Minister Keir Starmer's political standing, suggesting that poor local election results could threaten his leadership.
Britain's Foreign Office described the ambassador's remarks as private and informal, stressing that they do not reflect the government's official position. The controversy comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, as the royal visit is seen as an effort to steady relations amid policy disagreements and public criticism between the two governments.
