The United Kingdom's ambassador to the United States has suggested that Israel is 'probably' the only country with a true special relationship with the United States. Speaking privately to students in February, Sir Christian Turner said he avoids using the phrase because it feels nostalgic and burdened with historical baggage.
In a leaked recording, he advised that it would be unwise to assume relations would remain strong simply because they have been described as special in the past. While he emphasized the deep history and close cooperation between the United Kingdom and the United States, particularly in security and defence, he said the partnership may be entering a new era rather than facing a complete rupture.
The comments surfaced during King Charles the Third's state visit to the United States, a trip intended to ease tensions amid disagreements over the conflict involving Iran. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said the remarks were informal and made in a private setting, adding that they do not reflect the position of the British government.
