Two successive Israeli strikes on a building in the southern Lebanese town of Majdal Zoun killed five people, including three rescuers who had rushed to aid victims of the first attack, according to Lebanon's health ministry. The rescuers from the state-run civil defense agency were trapped under rubble by the second strike and later confirmed dead. The Lebanese army said two soldiers were also wounded.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam condemned the strikes as a 'new and blatant war crime committed by Israel.' The United Nations human rights office has previously warned that Israeli airstrikes on civilians, including health care workers, in Lebanon may amount to war crimes. Israel's military did not immediately comment on the latest incident.
More than 2,500 people have been killed in Israeli strikes across Lebanon since early March, after Hezbollah fired on Israeli positions, prompting a large-scale Israeli air and ground campaign. Although a ceasefire mediated by the United States reduced hostilities, clashes have continued in southern Lebanon, where Israeli forces maintain a presence and Hezbollah continues drone and rocket attacks.
