The Competition and Markets Authority has said there is no evidence of widespread fuel price gouging by retailers in the United Kingdom following the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel and Iran. The regulator found that overall profit margins were broadly unchanged between February and March, despite a spike in wholesale fuel prices.
Although margins rose for two supermarkets and three other retailers during that period, the authority said there was no broader pattern of higher earnings across the sector. The watchdog has launched further investigations into those increases and is expected to report back in May, noting that fuel margins remain historically high.
