The Defense Department announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany over the next six to twelve months, returning the United States military presence in Europe to levels seen before Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. An additional field artillery unit previously slated for deployment to Europe will no longer be sent. Officials said the decision followed a review of force posture and current conditions.
The move comes amid tensions between Washington and Berlin, after Germany's chancellor criticized the United States over its handling of the conflict with Iran. President Donald Trump publicly rebuked the German leader and signaled that a troop reduction was under consideration. A senior defense official said Germany's stance on the Iran conflict contributed to frustration within the administration.
Despite the reduction, Germany will continue to host more than 30,000 United States troops, the second-largest American military presence worldwide after Japan. Key operations, including staging for missions in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as major medical facilities and command headquarters, will remain in place.
