An Insurgency Threatens U.S. Mining Ambitions in Pakistan

The United States has pledged more than 1.3 billion dollars in mining investments in Pakistan's Balochistan Province, seeking access to vast reserves of copper and gold at the Reko Diq site. The initiative, championed by President Donald Trump and Pakistan's military leadership, is intended to deepen economic ties and reduce China's dominance in the sector. But the project faces mounting security risks from a resurgent separatist insurgency.

The Baloch Liberation Army, which is fighting for an independent Balochistan, launched a sweeping coordinated assault on Jan. 31, deploying hundreds of militants across multiple cities and killing dozens of civilians and security personnel. The attacks, some near key mining routes, underscored the group's growing strength and its ability to disrupt major infrastructure. Analysts warn that the insurgency now represents a central threat to the mining partnership.

Balochistan, Pakistan's largest and poorest province, has long been gripped by grievances over political marginalization, enforced disappearances and claims that local resources are exploited without benefiting residents. As violence intensifies and regional instability spills over from neighboring Iran and Afghanistan, companies have slowed development at Reko Diq. Observers caution that without improved security and political reconciliation, the ambitious mining venture could falter.
