The United Kingdom is preparing to begin negotiations with the European Union to join its 90 billion euro loan programme designed to support Ukraine over the next two years. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is expected to outline the plan at a major European summit in Armenia, highlighting the need for closer cooperation with European partners to strengthen Ukraine's defence and maintain pressure on Russia.
The European Union package will direct nearly two thirds of the funding toward military assistance, with the remainder aimed at supporting Ukraine's broader financial stability. British participation could provide additional backing for Kyiv while also creating opportunities for defence companies and jobs within the United Kingdom.
Alongside the proposed loan talks, the government plans to introduce further sanctions targeting Russian companies to disrupt military supply chains. The initiative forms part of a broader effort to reset relations with Europe, though ministers insist it does not signal a reversal of Brexit. The proposal has faced criticism from opposition parties as negotiations are expected to continue in the coming weeks.
