Police in Scotland are investigating a social media post by the Scottish Palestine Solidarity Campaign that depicted Jewish actress Maureen Lipman with devil horns and a pitchfork. The image accompanied a petition calling for the cancellation of her upcoming performance in the play Allegra at His Majesty's Theatre in Aberdeen.
The group accused Lipman of having a long record of harmful statements about Muslims, Palestinians and Palestinian rights. The Campaign Against Antisemitism condemned the depiction as a longstanding antisemitic trope and described the post as shameful. Police said the report is being assessed and that officers are engaging with the Jewish community.
The controversy comes amid heightened concern about antisemitism in the United Kingdom following recent attacks on Jewish people in London. Aberdeen Performing Arts said it does not endorse the political views of performers and that its venues are not used to promote personal or political narratives.
