Attacks Threaten to Reignite Iran Conflict

Tensions between Iran and the United States threatened to reignite after new attacks in the Persian Gulf, the first since an April 7 cease-fire. The United Arab Emirates accused Iran of firing missiles and drones at its territory, while American officials said Iranian forces launched cruise missiles at military ships and commercial vessels. American helicopter gunships later sank six Iranian military speedboats.

The incidents came a day after President Donald Trump ordered the military to help ships bypass Iran's blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Negotiations between the two countries have stalled, and it remains unclear whether the latest violence signals a full collapse of the truce. Oil prices jumped amid renewed fears of wider conflict.

In other major developments, the Supreme Court temporarily restored nationwide access to the abortion pill mifepristone by mail, pausing a lower court ruling that had restricted its distribution. The Trump administration is also weighing whether to require government reviews of new artificial intelligence models before their public release, marking a potential shift toward tighter oversight.

The Pulitzer Prizes were announced, with The New York Times winning three awards and The Washington Post receiving the public service prize. Additional headlines included military training exercises in the Arctic, escalating settler violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and the death of longtime New York Yankees broadcaster John Sterling.
