Japan's Self-Defense Forces fired a Type 88 anti-ship missile during joint maritime exercises with the United States, Australia, and the Philippines in waters facing the South China Sea. The missile struck a decommissioned Philippine Navy vessel about 75 kilometers off the northern Philippine coast, marking the first time Japan has conducted such a live-fire drill in the country.
The exercise coincided with talks between Manila and Tokyo on a possible transfer of defense equipment, following Japan's decision to lift restrictions on military exports. Discussions include the potential early transfer of Abukuma-class destroyers and TC-90 aircraft to the Philippines.
More than 17,000 troops are participating in this year's Balikatan war games, including forces from Japan, the United States, Australia, Canada, France, and New Zealand. Philippine officials said the drills demonstrate growing interoperability among allied forces, while China has criticized the exercises as heightening regional tensions.
