Israel said to have built secret base in Iraqi desert to support Iran air campaign

Israel reportedly established a covert military base in the Iraqi desert in February to support its aerial campaign against Iran, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal citing American officials and other sources. The base was said to function as a logistical hub for the Israeli Air Force and housed special forces and search and rescue teams prepared to respond if pilots were downed.

The report said Israeli troops carried out airstrikes against Iraqi forces in early March after the outpost was nearly discovered, killing one Iraqi soldier and deterring further investigation. Iraqi officials initially blamed the United States for the strike and condemned it as an uncoordinated operation conducted without approval. American officials later said the United States was not involved.

A former Israeli Air Force chief had previously referenced 'extraordinary' missions conducted by special units during the conflict with Iran, without providing details. Analysts noted that western Iraq's vast and sparsely populated desert makes it a suitable location for clandestine operations. Iraq has faced increasing strain during the conflict, balancing ties between Washington and Tehran while armed groups within its borders have targeted American interests, prompting retaliatory strikes.
