The 2026 Eurovision Song Contest opens in Vienna with a celebratory parade marking its seventieth anniversary, but the event is overshadowed by controversy over Israel's participation. Five countries — Iceland, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain — are boycotting the competition in protest of Israel's military offensive in Gaza, which followed the October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel. A ceasefire has been in place since October 2025, yet tensions remain high.

Recent contests were marked by protests, heavy security and disputes over voting, including allegations that Israel's government encouraged supporters to influence the public vote. The failed attempt to force a vote on Israel's exclusion led to several withdrawals, including some of the contest's most prominent participants and financial contributors.

The boycott has divided Eurovision's devoted fan community, with some fan sites suspending coverage while others encourage dialogue and continued engagement. Although tickets for the Vienna shows sold out quickly, broadcasters in several participating countries will not air the event, and security concerns persist.

Organisers insist the contest can withstand political controversy, noting that it has faced similar challenges in the past. Still, uncertainty lingers over audience reaction and the potential fallout if Israel performs strongly, leaving this anniversary edition marked by both celebration and apprehension.
