Hundreds of mourners gathered in the coastal city of Sidon to grieve eight members of a displaced Lebanese family killed in an Israeli airstrike on the town of Saksakiyeh. Among the dead were a married couple, their three children, a six month old grandchild, the father's brother and a grandmother. Relatives wept over the bodies before they were taken for burial in their hometown of Jibchit.
The Israeli military said it had targeted militants from Hezbollah operating from a building used for military purposes, adding that reports of civilian casualties were under review. Saksakiyeh had not been included in earlier evacuation warnings issued for parts of southern Lebanon.
The strike comes amid rising tensions that threaten a fragile truce reached about a month ago. Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged near daily attacks, with Israel intensifying airstrikes and Hezbollah responding with rockets, artillery and drones. More than 450 people in Lebanon and 20 people in Israel have been killed since the fighting began in early March, according to officials on both sides.
