The European Union is expected to approve new sanctions targeting Israeli settlers accused of violence against Palestinians, according to the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas. The decision follows months of delay caused by opposition from Hungary’s former prime minister, Viktor Orban, whose recent removal from office has cleared the way for agreement.
Seven settlers or settler-linked organizations are set to be blacklisted. The European Union is also preparing sanctions against representatives of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. The measures come amid escalating violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.
Palestinian officials and the United Nations have reported a surge in deadly settler attacks since late February, alongside ongoing clashes involving Israeli troops. Despite the expected sanctions, member states remain divided over whether to pursue broader actions against Israel, such as restricting trade ties.
