Israeli police shot and killed a 44 year old Palestinian man as he attempted to climb the concrete barrier separating the occupied West Bank from Jerusalem, according to Palestinian authorities. The man was identified as Zakaria Qatusa from the town of Deir Qadis, and his funeral was held on Wednesday.
His brother said Qatusa, a father of four, was trying to cross the barrier to find work in Israel to support his family. He said there were no other opportunities available to provide a dignified living and described him as neither an aggressor nor a threat.
An increasing number of Palestinians have tried to enter Israel without permits in recent years in search of employment. Before the war between Israel and Hamas, tens of thousands of Palestinians held permits allowing them to work in Israel.
