Over 120,000 Syrian refugees in Lebanon returned to their hometowns in the Syrian Arab Republic during the first four months of 2026, according to official figures. The returns come amid fragile ceasefires between the United States and Iran and between Hezbollah and Israel that have been in place since early April.

Currently, 490,424 Syrian refugees are registered with the United Nations Human Rights Council in Lebanon, while Lebanese authorities estimate that about 1.12 million people fled to the country during Syria’s civil war from 2011 to 2024. Officials in Damascus reported that around 1.26 million people have arrived from Lebanon since January, including the 120,000 returning refugees.

In total, more than 3.4 million people crossed into Syria during the same period. The Jousieh border crossing has become a key transit point for returnees, many of whom are leaving Lebanon due to mounting economic hardship and tighter residency regulations.
