The world after the Strait of Hormuz crisis

The Strait of Hormuz crisis has evolved from a regional dispute into a defining test of the emerging global order. Once viewed mainly through tensions involving Iran, the United States, and Israel, the strait has become a central arena in the struggle over control of trade routes and energy flows. Its prominence at a summit between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping underscored that its stability is now a matter of worldwide concern.

Iran’s newly articulated vision of the strait reflects a major strategic shift. Rather than treating it as a narrow passage, Tehran now sees it as a broad maritime zone stretching deep into surrounding waters, asserting the authority to monitor and influence navigation across a wide area. This approach replaces the threat of outright closure with sustained uncertainty, creating economic pressure through risk, higher insurance costs, and market volatility.

The crisis highlights two competing global models. The United States relies on military alliances and naval power to secure shipping lanes, while China seeks to reduce dependence on vulnerable chokepoints through infrastructure, diversified energy supplies, and overland trade corridors. As countries expand pipelines, invest in renewable energy, and explore alternative routes, the world is both militarizing key waterways and attempting to lessen reliance on them.

Although alternatives are expanding, especially for oil, critical supplies such as liquefied natural gas remain heavily dependent on the strait. For now, its strategic importance endures, but the crisis may mark the beginning of a shift in global power defined less by territorial control and more by influence over the flow of energy and trade.
