United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has arrived in India for a four-day visit focused heavily on energy security as disruptions linked to the Iran conflict continue to roil global markets. Shipments through the Strait of Hormuz have nearly halted, worsening a crisis for India, which imports more than 80 percent of its energy needs. Rubio has said Washington is ready to supply India with record levels of oil and gas, positioning the United States as an alternative supplier.

Energy cooperation is also tied to trade tensions between the two countries. The United States goods trade deficit with India rose sharply in 2025, and recent tariff reductions followed an interim agreement under which India committed to purchase more American goods, including energy and aircraft. Negotiations toward a broader bilateral trade deal are ongoing, though experts caution that headline investment pledges have yet to translate into concrete commitments.

Rubio’s visit comes amid lingering diplomatic strains, including disagreements over trade, claims surrounding mediation in last year’s India Pakistan conflict, and Washington’s ties with Islamabad. While sensitive issues are expected to be handled privately, public attention will focus on whether the two sides can deepen cooperation without inflaming regional tensions.

The trip will also test the future of the four-nation partnership that includes India, the United States, Australia and Japan. Rubio is set to attend a meeting of foreign ministers in New Delhi, as India seeks to reinforce its geopolitical standing while balancing relations with China and preparing to host a summit of a broader grouping that includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Iran and Saudi Arabia later this year.
