More than 220 Italian priests have expressed support for Palestinian rights in a letter addressed to Cardinal Matteo Zuppi ahead of the Italian Bishops' General Assembly in Rome. Titled 'Enough Silence Now,' the letter urges the Italian Bishops' Conference to take a clear and public stance on the suffering of Palestinians and to raise what the signatories describe as a strong evangelical voice.
The priests emphasize that their appeal is rooted in solidarity with victims and a commitment to peace, rather than opposition. They argue that the church cannot treat those who inflict injustice and those who endure it as morally equivalent, particularly in light of recent violence, including the assault on the Global Sumud Flotilla.
The letter calls for an immediate and lasting ceasefire, an end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip, and unrestricted humanitarian aid. It also urges halting military, economic, and diplomatic cooperation with Israel, including divestment and sanctions, while promoting a broader culture of peace and accountability.
