Galit Distel Atbaryan of the Likud party announced that she will not seek reelection and will leave the Knesset at the end of the current term. She made the statement during a session of the special parliamentary panel overseeing Communications Minister Shlomo Karhi's contentious media reform legislation.
Her decision follows months of criticism surrounding her leadership of the committee, including claims that it bypassed standard parliamentary procedures, limited debate, and ignored legal guidance. The Knesset legal adviser recently urged that the proposed legislation be transferred to the Economic Affairs Committee, where similar bills are typically reviewed.
Distel Atbaryan has served in the Knesset since 2022. She previously held the role of public diplomacy minister but resigned shortly after the October 7, 2023 attacks, saying her ministry had been sidelined. The ministry faced criticism for failing to produce significant public messaging during the crisis and was later closed.
