Maduro arrives at New York court for first hearing since capture by US forces

Deposed Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro appeared in a New York courtroom for the first time since being captured by United States forces. Maduro and his wife were transported under heavy guard for a brief legal proceeding, marking the start of what is expected to be a lengthy legal battle over his prosecution on narco-terrorism charges. His lawyers are expected to argue that he is immune from prosecution as a former head of state, a defense the United States has previously rejected in similar cases.

The United States does not recognize Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate leader, especially after a disputed reelection. The new interim president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, has demanded Maduro's return but also signaled a willingness to cooperate with the United States. The indictment accuses Maduro and others of working with drug cartels to traffic cocaine and ordering violent crimes to protect their operation. If convicted, Maduro could face life in prison.

The case has sparked protests outside the courthouse and raised questions about the future of Venezuela's oil industry and governance. The United States has indicated it will not govern Venezuela directly, but tensions remain high as American officials call for greater access to the country and warn of further consequences if demands are not met.
