Israel has rebuked the president of South Korea after he shared a social media post that allegedly misrepresented an old video from the West Bank. The dispute centers on claims that the footage depicted a recent incident, prompting criticism from Israeli officials who said the material was taken out of context.
The South Korean president stated that the authenticity of the incident should be verified and that, if it did occur, authorities should clarify what actions were taken afterward. He also drew comparisons between the alleged event and historical atrocities, including the issue of so-called 'comfort women' during the Second World War and the Holocaust, arguing that there was no essential difference between those episodes and killings in wartime.
Israeli officials strongly objected to the comparison and the characterization of the video, saying it distorted historical facts and unfairly linked Israel to some of the gravest crimes of the twentieth century. The exchange has added diplomatic tension between the two countries.
