A man was arrested after allegedly throwing a Molotov cocktail at the San Francisco home of Sam Altman, the Jewish-American chief executive of OpenAI, in what authorities described as a targeted and ideologically motivated attack. The overnight fire damaged the property but caused no injuries.
Prosecutors said the suspect, identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama, was driven by extreme beliefs that artificial intelligence could lead to 'the extinction of humanity.' Investigators reportedly discovered a document outlining a plan to kill Altman, along with a list of other senior artificial intelligence figures and their personal details.
Authorities said the suspect later went to OpenAI offices, where he allegedly attempted to break in and threatened to set the building on fire and harm those inside before being arrested. In a separate incident, police are also investigating a shooting that targeted Altman’s home, with two additional suspects detained, though it remains unclear whether the cases are connected.
Altman said recent years have been intense and called for a more measured and constructive public discussion about artificial intelligence. The company confirmed no one was harmed and said it is cooperating with law enforcement to ensure staff safety.
