United States Vice President JD Vance said he is optimistic about the prospects for a deal with Iran following unprecedented talks held in Pakistan over the weekend. Speaking at a Turning Point event in Georgia, Vance acknowledged nearly five decades of mistrust between the two countries but said the fact that such high level discussions took place marked a significant step forward.
Vance said the Iranian officials involved in the talks appeared to want an agreement and that President Donald Trump had directed the delegation to negotiate in good faith. He described the president’s proposal as a 'grand bargain' in which Iran would commit to not pursuing a nuclear weapon in exchange for economic growth and greater integration into the global economy.
Although Vance initially said the talks did not produce a final agreement, he later noted that progress had been made and that discussions could continue. He emphasized that the next move rests with Iran, particularly regarding the removal of nuclear material, and said the United States remains open to further negotiations.
