Israel's military is facing a growing manpower crisis as operational demands expand across multiple fronts while troop numbers remain insufficient. Political leaders had pledged, at the request of the chief of staff, to advance legislation extending compulsory service, but progress has stalled and discussions are not expected to resume soon.
About a month ago, the military's chief spokesperson warned that the armed forces require approximately 15,000 additional soldiers, including around 8,000 combat troops. Despite this need, tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox men continue to be exempt from enlistment, deepening the strain on existing personnel.
As deployments increase in buffer zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza, combat units are being stretched thin. With the standing army operating at its limits, reservists are increasingly being called upon to fill operational gaps, highlighting the widening gap between territorial responsibilities and available manpower.
