United States President Donald Trump announced a 10 day ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel, saying both sides agreed to halt military actions starting at 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time. The announcement followed calls with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and came after the two countries met in Washington for the first time in 34 years.
Trump said he has directed Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to work with both governments toward a lasting peace. He also invited Aoun and Netanyahu to the White House for further talks aimed at stabilizing the region.
Aoun thanked Trump and Rubio for their efforts and urged swift action to secure a permanent ceasefire. Lebanon reiterated that any lasting truce must include an Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, allowing the Lebanese army to deploy along the border and address the presence of Hezbollah.
Despite the diplomatic push, fighting continued, with Hezbollah launching rockets and drones into northern Israel and Israeli forces striking targets in southern Lebanon. Israel has signaled plans to create a security zone inside Lebanese territory, underscoring the challenges facing the proposed truce.
