Jewish and pro-Israel advocacy groups are urging President Donald Trump to make the release of Americans detained in Iran an urgent national priority as his administration works to preserve a fragile ceasefire in the Middle East. The organizations said the wrongful detention of Americans must not be sidelined during broader negotiations and called for unwavering efforts to secure their return.

The appeal was signed by several prominent groups, along with relatives of detainees including the family of Robert Levinson, a retired Federal Bureau of Investigation agent who disappeared in Iran in 2007 and was later declared dead in custody. His family asked the president to prioritize accountability and justice as part of any talks with Tehran.

The push comes as Trump announced a 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon and expressed optimism about reaching a longer-term agreement with Iran focused largely on its nuclear program. Although hostage releases are typically handled separately from nuclear negotiations, advocates argue that the recovery of detained Americans should be integrated into broader diplomatic discussions.

The administration has previously secured the release of more than 70 Americans from hostile regions since January 2025, according to supporters. Officials have also formally designated Iran for its pattern of wrongful detentions, signaling continued pressure on Tehran to release those still held.
