Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was 'stunned and saddened' after a soldier from the Israel Defense Forces damaged a Christian statue of Jesus in southern Lebanon. He condemned the act in the strongest terms and said military authorities have opened a criminal investigation and will take harsh disciplinary action against the offender.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel upholds values of tolerance and mutual respect among all faiths, stating that all religions flourish in the country and that freedom of worship is protected. He added that the Christian population in Israel is growing and enjoys a high standard of living compared to elsewhere in the region.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar also described the incident as grave and disgraceful, praising the military for launching an investigation. He reiterated that the act contradicts Israel’s values and issued an apology to Christians whose feelings were hurt. The incident took place in the Lebanese village of Debl, one of several Christian communities that had received special permission and humanitarian assistance from Israel.
