Items belonging to fighters who defended Gush Etzion during Israel's War of Independence are being displayed to the public for the first time as part of a new educational initiative led by the Gush Etzion Regional Council. The traveling exhibit aims to bring historical artifacts directly into schools, allowing students to encounter the region’s history in a tangible and personal way.

Among the objects on display are the hat of Moshe Silberschmidt, the last commander of Gush Etzion who was killed while covering his troops’ retreat in 1948, and the wool sweater of Palmach fighter and combat medic Uriel Ofek. Ofek’s sweater, later found riddled with bullet holes after he stepped away to treat a wounded soldier, is presented as a powerful symbol of survival and sacrifice. A necklace believed to have belonged to Zilfa Carasso Yehezkeli, the oldest fallen soldier in Israel Defense Forces history, is also featured after being recovered from the ruins of a destroyed bunker.

Council leaders described the exhibit as more than a historical display, calling it a living encounter with heroism and a responsibility to pass these stories to the next generation. The exhibit is currently housed at a school in Neve Daniel and will rotate to additional schools in the coming months, while also being accessible to the public by prior arrangement.
