Police in the United Kingdom have arrested eight people as part of a counterterrorism investigation into a series of arson attacks in London, some targeting Jewish institutions. Seven of the arrests were made within the past 48 hours over an alleged plot to carry out another attack on a site connected to the Jewish community. All suspects are being held in custody.
Authorities also arrested a 39-year-old man in Ealing in connection with jars containing a non-hazardous substance found in Kensington Gardens. The arrests follow a March 23 incident in which ambulances belonging to a Jewish emergency organization were set on fire in Golders Green.
Since that attack, 23 individuals have been arrested. Eight have been charged with arson-related offenses, while others remain in custody or have been released on bail. Police say they are investigating whether paid criminal proxies are being used and have warned that those involved could face severe penalties under national security legislation.
