Iran executed Mehdi Farid on Wednesday after convicting him of cooperating with Israel's Mossad spy agency, according to the judiciary. Authorities said he was found guilty of 'corruption on earth' following a review of his case and approval of the final verdict.
A Norway-based rights group and a United States-based news agency focusing on human rights reported that Farid had worked for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization at the time of his arrest in May 2023. They said he was initially sentenced to 10 years in prison but was later retried and condemned to death in July 2025 after a prosecutor's appeal.
The execution comes amid a surge in hangings that has raised alarm among rights organizations, particularly since the outbreak of war with the United States and Israel in late February. Iranian officials have called for faster rulings in cases linked to the conflict and warned that there will be no leniency for those accused of collaborating with Israel.
