Graham Platner, a leading candidate in Maine's Democratic Senate primary, said in a recent interview that he would seek to 'shut the White House down' by issuing sweeping subpoenas against administration officials. He also called for the impeachment of Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito, arguing there is a compelling case for their removal. Platner said officials involved in immigration enforcement actions and overseas military operations should face intense congressional scrutiny.
Platner cited concerns about Justice Thomas's past financial disclosures involving travel and real estate transactions connected to a wealthy donor, as well as Justice Alito's previously undisclosed travel on a private jet funded by a billionaire. Both justices have defended their actions, stating they followed guidance in place at the time and did not believe the trips required disclosure. Other members of the Supreme Court have also amended past financial disclosures.
In addition to supporting judicial impeachments, Platner said he is open to expanding the size of the Supreme Court. He added that he would not prioritize impeaching former President Donald Trump without sufficient votes for conviction. Platner, a combat veteran backed by several prominent progressive lawmakers, is currently leading in primary polling but has faced controversy over a tattoo resembling extremist imagery and past online activity that drew criticism.
