About 2,000 people gathered at the Ramada Hotel in Jerusalem for an Independence Day celebration organized by the Orthodox Union Israel for English speakers. Senior leaders of the organization addressed the crowd, highlighting gratitude for the State of Israel and honoring those who sacrificed their lives to defend it. Participants included immigrants from the United States, Canada, Australia, and South Africa.
Speakers reflected on the transition from Remembrance Day to Independence Day, emphasizing the nation’s resilience and growth despite ongoing challenges. Jerusalem’s deputy mayor described the shift from mourning fallen soldiers to celebrating statehood as a defining characteristic of Israeli society.
The event also featured a moving tribute from the director of the Yachad program for individuals with special needs, who shared the story of her nephew, Staff Sergeant Maoz Morell of the Israel Defense Forces. She recounted his dedication to his faith, his fellow soldiers, and his mission, describing how he was fatally wounded while protecting others in Gaza. Her remarks underscored themes of sacrifice, legacy, and the enduring spirit of the nation.
