The Women's Asian Cup concludes in Sydney on Saturday with Australia facing Japan in the final, marking the third time in four editions that the two teams have met at this stage. Japan claimed victory in the 2014 and 2018 finals, setting up another high-stakes encounter between the regional rivals.
The tournament initially drew global attention due to the participation of Iran’s team, whose players had left the Middle East before conflict escalated in their homeland. While seven players were initially granted asylum in Australia, all but two have since returned home, shifting the focus back to the competition itself.
Japan secured their place in the final with a 4-1 semifinal win over South Korea, while Australia edged defending champion China 2-1. Much of the spotlight has been on Australian striker Sam Kerr, who has scored four goals in the tournament and recently returned from a long injury layoff. Kerr, who first made her mark in the 2010 final as a teenager, now has another opportunity to deliver a defining moment on home soil.
