The United States State Department is offering up to $10 million for information leading to the location of Hashim Finyan Rahim al Saraji, leader of the Iran-backed Iraqi armed group Kataeb Sayyid al Shuhada. Washington designates the group as a terrorist organization and accuses it of killing Iraqi civilians and carrying out attacks on American diplomatic facilities and military personnel in Iraq and Syria.
Officials said individuals who provide information could be eligible for relocation in addition to the financial reward. Al Saraji is also a member of Iraq’s ruling Shiite alliance, known as the Coordination Framework, which holds a parliamentary majority.
Iran-backed armed groups have repeatedly targeted the American embassy in Baghdad, facilities at the city’s airport, and oil fields operated by foreign companies. The reward offer comes amid heightened regional tensions following recent military action involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, and increasing pressure from Washington on Baghdad to curb the influence of pro-Tehran factions.
