Brics consensus on Middle East elusive because of sharp differences, government backs Palestine cause

A meeting of officials from the grouping of major emerging economies failed to produce a joint consensus document on the Middle East due to sharp differences among member countries directly involved in the conflict. Efforts to bridge positions were unsuccessful, resulting in the release of a Chair's statement instead of a unified declaration. The discussions addressed the Palestine issue, the situation in Gaza, humanitarian assistance, a ceasefire in Lebanon, and a zero-tolerance approach to terrorism.

India, which currently holds the presidency of the bloc and will host upcoming ministerial meetings and the annual summit, reiterated that its position on Palestine remains unchanged. Government sources emphasized India’s continued support for a negotiated two-state solution and recalled its recent alignment with Arab nations on the issue.

Since the start of the Gaza conflict, India has provided about 70 metric tonnes of humanitarian aid, including medicines and medical supplies, and financial assistance to the United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees. Officials underscored India’s longstanding backing for the creation of a sovereign, independent, and viable State of Palestine living side by side in peace with Israel, as well as its support for Palestine’s membership in the United Nations.
