Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ordered the cancellation of the annual Lag Ba'Omer celebrations in Meron, citing security concerns tied to the fragile ceasefire with Lebanon. The decision followed multiple security assessments and updated civil defense guidelines limiting public gatherings in communities near the northern border.
Under the revised rules, gatherings in affected areas, including Meron and nearby communities, are capped at 1,500 people. As a result, the traditional large-scale celebration honoring Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai will not take place in its usual format this year.
Officials said the directive is driven by concerns over a potential mass-casualty event due to the site's proximity to Lebanon, the risk of rocket fire, and the challenges of evacuating large crowds quickly if necessary. The event will instead be marked in a symbolic and limited manner in accordance with safety regulations.
