National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has publicly defended Israel Prison Service Commissioner Kobi Yaakobi after the attorney-general filed an indictment against him. Ben-Gvir sharply criticized Attorney-General Gali Baharav-Miara, accusing her of acting against the country's interests and attempting to frame Yaakobi.
Ben-Gvir praised Yaakobi as 'the best commissioner in the nation's history,' crediting him with reforming the prison system, strengthening governance, and restoring order in facilities that he said had long suffered from neglect. He insisted that Yaakobi should remain in his post despite the legal proceedings.
Yaakobi is suspected of passing confidential and sensitive information to a senior West Bank police officer about a covert investigation involving that officer, allegedly compromising the probe. The case emerged after several senior officials were detained in late 2024 as authorities investigated suspected enforcement failures and improper influence in the West Bank District. Ben-Gvir has repeatedly dismissed the investigation as politically motivated and vowed that Yaakobi will continue serving as commissioner.
