Taj is a former member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are not welcome in Canada, though he declined to comment on specific cases. The incident highlights mounting political and logistical challenges surrounding Iran's participation in the expanded 48 team tournament, which will be co hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
