An Iranian soccer federation delegation said it was forced to turn back at Toronto's main airport this week despite holding valid visas, citing 'inappropriate behavior' by Canadian immigration officials. The group, which included federation president Mehdi Taj, was traveling to Vancouver for the Congress of the International Federation of Association Football ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Taj is a former member of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Canadian Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps are not welcome in Canada, though he declined to comment on specific cases. The incident highlights mounting political and logistical challenges surrounding Iran's participation in the expanded 48 team tournament, which will be co hosted by Canada, the United States, and Mexico.
The dispute has intensified concerns over visas, security, and cross border travel as the World Cup approaches. Soccer officials from other nations have questioned how travel arrangements will be handled amid rising geopolitical tensions. The International Federation of Association Football has reportedly expressed regret over the episode and is seeking further discussions with the Iranian delegation.
