A report in The New York Times says that the war involving Iran has significantly strained the United States weapons supply, raising concerns about the country’s preparedness for potential conflicts with China and Russia. Defense contractors are now working to sharply increase production of key missile defense interceptors to replenish depleted stockpiles.
Lockheed Martin plans to boost annual production of its Patriot missile interceptors from 600 to 2,000 and to increase output of interceptors for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system from 96 to 400 per year. Despite these plans, the administration reportedly lacks sufficient funding and congressional backing to purchase the quantities needed to prepare for future large scale wars.
The situation has sparked fears that the United States may struggle to maintain readiness if another major conflict emerges before weapons inventories are restored.
