Narges Mohammadi, the imprisoned Iranian Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has been urgently transferred from prison in Zanjan to a hospital after what her foundation described as a catastrophic deterioration in her health. According to the foundation, she suffered two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis following months of what it called systematic medical neglect.
Mohammadi, 53, had reportedly fainted twice in prison and was believed to have suffered a heart attack in March. Her lawyers said she had experienced chest pain, breathing difficulties, and extreme fluctuations in blood pressure. She was admitted to a cardiac care unit, though her condition remains unstable. Her family described the hospital transfer as a desperate, last-minute action that may have come too late.
Her relatives and legal representatives have long pressed authorities to allow specialized medical treatment, saying prosecutors repeatedly blocked requests. A medical official recommended a one-month suspension of her sentence for treatment, but the matter was referred to judicial authorities in Tehran.
Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 while in prison, has faced multiple sentences on national security charges and was re-arrested in December after a temporary medical furlough. Supporters say she has suffered previous heart attacks in custody and accuse authorities of life-threatening mistreatment amid her continued activism against Iran's government.
