Iran is accused of supplying attack drones to the Sudanese Armed Forces in Sudan's civil war, intensifying a conflict that has killed as many as 400,000 people and displaced more than 11 million since April 2023. Analysts say Iran has provided Mohajer-6 drones, described as a reusable platform capable of surveillance and precision strikes, which have allegedly been used in attacks that have killed civilians and destroyed vital infrastructure.
United States authorities recently arrested an Iranian-born resident in California for allegedly brokering a 70 million dollar deal to supply drones, bombs and ammunition to Sudan's Ministry of Defense. Officials say multiple cargo flights between Iran and Sudan suggest the transfers may be ongoing.
The State Department and United Nations officials have condemned the growing use of drones by both sides in the conflict, citing strikes on hospitals, schools, residential neighborhoods and humanitarian aid convoys. Aid agencies warn that children are increasingly at risk, with drone warfare spreading fear and devastation across Darfur and Kordofan.
United States officials say they are working to curb Iran's influence in Sudan, warning that foreign support and advanced weapons are worsening civilian suffering in what has become one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises.
