Prime Minister Keir Starmer has warned that antisemitism in the United Kingdom is 'real, growing and dangerous' following a stabbing attack in Golders Green that injured members of the Jewish community. He described the incident as part of a broader pattern of hate-driven violence rather than an isolated event, saying the country faces a tipping point amid rising extremism.
Starmer said the government has increased policing and protective security for vulnerable communities and is reviewing whether existing law enforcement powers are sufficient to address evolving threats. He called for national resolve and urged citizens to reject politics rooted in grievance and division.
Recent attacks, including assaults on ambulances linked to Jewish emergency volunteers and suspected arson at memorial sites, have heightened fears. According to the Community Security Trust, nearly 3,700 antisemitic incidents were recorded last year, more than double the previous year, with officials warning that some individuals may be influenced or supported by hostile foreign actors.
