The United Kingdom is set to begin negotiations to join a £78 billion European Union loan scheme designed to support Ukraine over the next two years. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met President Volodymyr Zelensky in Yerevan ahead of a European Political Community summit, pledging to work with allies to secure a just and lasting peace and ensure Ukraine receives the military equipment it needs.

European Union leaders recently approved the €90 billion package after Hungary lifted its veto, with two thirds allocated to defence and the remainder for broader financial assistance. Downing Street indicated that further sanctions on Russian companies are expected this week in an effort to disrupt military supply chains.

Sir Keir said closer cooperation with European partners would strengthen defence and create opportunities for British industry, while maintaining that deeper ties do not reverse the decision to leave the bloc. He is also expected to discuss Middle East security, including tensions affecting shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, during meetings with other European leaders.
