Negotiations between Hamas and the Board of Peace executive council have reached an impasse over the issue of disarmament, according to a report by the Israeli public broadcaster. Talks between Board of Peace Director General Nickolay Mladenov and a Hamas delegation led by Khalil al Hayya stalled after Hamas refused to move forward with the second phase of a ceasefire agreement.
Hamas has stated it will only surrender its weapons after the full implementation of the first phase of the deal, which includes a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and guarantees toward the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. Israel has reportedly rejected withdrawing beyond the Gaza yellow line, an area with a significant military presence.
Israeli officials warned that if Hamas does not disarm, military operations in Gaza could resume. Israel’s security cabinet has convened to discuss the possibility of renewed fighting, while Hamas has also proposed specific conditions regarding which weapons would be subject to disarmament, though details were not disclosed.
