Three people have died aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius following an outbreak of a hantavirus-linked illness during a six-week voyage in the South Atlantic Ocean. The ship, operated by the Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions, departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20 and made stops in Antarctica and on the remote island of St. Helena.
The vessel is currently located several hundred kilometers off the west coast of Africa near Cape Verde, with about 150 passengers and 71 crew members on board. Only one doctor is present on the ship, prompting an international medical response as authorities work to manage the situation and investigate how the rare rodent-borne virus spread at sea.
The outbreak has raised concerns about onboard health protocols and the challenges of containing infectious diseases in isolated maritime settings, particularly during extended voyages far from major medical facilities.
