Maher Bitar, a former senior official on President Joe Biden’s National Security Council and most recently chief counsel to Senator Adam Schiff, has been chosen to lead a reconstituted Democratic foreign policy organization aimed at staffing the next Democratic presidential administration. The group, originally founded by senior Democratic foreign policy figures in 2018, is expected to play a major role in shaping policy and personnel decisions ahead of the 2028 election.
Bitar’s selection has drawn attention due to his long record of activism critical of Israel. As a college student, he was involved in organizing pro-Palestinian initiatives and supporting divestment campaigns targeting Israel. He later held senior roles in Democratic foreign policy circles, including overseeing intelligence programs in the White House.
His appointment signals a broader shift within parts of the Democratic Party, where skepticism toward Israel and support for restricting military aid have grown more prominent. With several potential presidential contenders advocating tougher stances on Israel, Bitar is positioned to help shape the party’s foreign policy message and build support among activists and younger voters ahead of the next administration.
