Syria's Interior Ministry announced on May 5 that it had dismantled a Hezbollah-linked cell accused of planning large-scale attacks to destabilize the country. Authorities said the group had infiltrated from Lebanon after receiving specialized training and was preparing coordinated operations, including assassinations of senior government officials. Raids were carried out across several major cities, and security forces seized weapons, explosives, and surveillance equipment.

The crackdown highlights Damascus's effort to assert control and reinforce internal security following years of conflict and foreign influence. Hezbollah had entrenched itself deeply in Syria during the civil war after being invited by the former Assad government, building networks across the country and cooperating with Iranian-backed militias. Its presence expanded near the Golan Heights and along key border areas, contributing to regional tensions.

Since the fall of the Assad government in December 2024, Hezbollah's influence in Syria has diminished significantly. Weakened by battlefield losses and political shifts, the group has operated more covertly while attempting to maintain smuggling routes to Lebanon. The current government under Ahmed al-Shara'a has intensified efforts to dismantle these remaining networks.

The latest operations come as Syria navigates broader challenges, including integrating Kurdish-led forces into national structures, addressing instability in the south, and organizing political processes in formerly autonomous regions. By targeting Hezbollah cells, Damascus aims to demonstrate its capacity to confront security threats and stabilize the country.
